CBI Arrests EPFO Officer in Jalgaon for Bribery

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested an Enforcement Officer from the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) in Jalgaon. The officer was caught demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 25,000 from a complainant.

Background of the Case

On October 8, 2024, the CBI registered a case against the officer following allegations that the complainant’s father’s labor supply firm received an email from the Regional Head of EPFO in Jalgaon. The email, dated July 31, 2024, informed them about an upcoming audit scheduled between July 31 and August 2, 2024.

Allegations and Bribery Demand

During the audit, the Audit Officer allegedly informed the complainant that the firm had defaulted on Provident Fund payments for March 2023, amounting to Rs 2 lakhs. The accused officer then contacted the complainant and demanded Rs 50,000 to settle the dues. After negotiations, the bribe amount was reduced to Rs 25,000.

CBI’s Action

The CBI set up a trap and caught the officer red-handed while accepting the bribe. Following the arrest, searches were conducted at the officer’s residences and offices in Jalgaon and Nashik, leading to the recovery of incriminating documents. The investigation is ongoing.
