Canadian PM Justin Trudeau and UK PM Keir Starmer Discuss Tensions with India

On October 14, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau spoke with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer about rising tensions between Canada and India concerning the Hardeep Singh Nijjar case. Trudeau’s office released a statement highlighting their discussion on the safety of citizens and the rule of law. Trudeau emphasized Canada’s willingness to cooperate with India to resolve the issue. Both leaders agreed to maintain regular communication.

Trudeau has alleged India’s involvement in the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, claims which India has denied, labeling them as “absurd” and “motivated.” India has accused Canada of harboring extremist elements. In response to the diplomatic row, Canada’s Foreign Affairs Minister Melanie Joly stated that the expulsion of Indian diplomats was based on evidence from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) and urged India to support the investigation.

India expelled six Canadian diplomats, including Stewart Ross Wheeler, Acting High Commissioner, and others, demanding their departure by October 19, 2024. India also withdrew its High Commissioner and summoned Canada’s Charge d’Affaires, Stewart Wheeler, to express disapproval of the allegations against Indian diplomats. India rejected Canada’s diplomatic communication, calling it “preposterous” and politically motivated.
