Calcutta High Court Orders CBI Probe into Doctor’s Murder

Kolkata (West Bengal), August 13: The Calcutta High Court has ordered a CBI investigation into the sexual assault and murder of a woman doctor. The BJP welcomed the decision and demanded the resignation of the Chief Minister (CM) of West Bengal.

BJP’s Response

West Bengal Leader of Opposition (LoP) Suvendu Adhikari expressed his approval of the court’s decision. He stated, “I welcome this. I have said from day one that there should be a court-monitored CBI probe… Now we demand that the health minister and the chief minister resign. The CM is involved and her personal physician and very close aide Dr. SP Das, is the main person, he is controlling the health department in West Bengal.”

Advocates’ Statements

Advocate Billwadal Bhattacharyya criticized the police for initially registering the case as a suicide and delaying the filing of an FIR. He emphasized the need for a court-monitored investigation to prevent evidence destruction. He also mentioned that the victim’s parents were present in court and expressed concerns about their safety, which the CBI should address under the witness protection scheme.

Another advocate, Koustav Bagchi, highlighted that the CBI investigation would instill public confidence. He said, “We are very much happy. We had prayed to the court that there should be a CBI investigation and it should be monitored by the court. The court has handed over the investigation to the CBI and the court will monitor it. To instill confidence in the minds of the public at large as well as the family of the victim, the investigation has been handed over to the CBI.”

Protests and Court Orders

A protesting doctor expressed relief that the case had been transferred to the CBI, believing that the accused would be arrested soon. The court has directed the Kolkata Police to hand over all documents to the CBI immediately.

Background

The case involves the death of a post-graduate trainee doctor found inside the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on August 9. The investigation revealed rape and murder, with the body bearing scratch marks indicating a struggle. The victim’s family has alleged rape and murder.

Union Health Minister’s Involvement

Union Health Minister JP Nadda met with a delegation from the Indian Medical Association (IMA), which demanded an impartial investigation and punishment for the culprits. The IMA also called for improved safety measures for doctors, especially women, in the workplace.
