New Delhi, India – CPI(M) leader Brinda Karat has condemned Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi’s recent comments on secularism. She expressed her disapproval, stating it is a ‘shame’ that such a person holds the position of governor in an important state like Tamil Nadu.

Governor RN Ravi’s Remarks

Governor RN Ravi, while speaking at a convocation in Kanyakumari, claimed that secularism is a ‘European concept’ and not relevant to India. He argued that secularism arose from conflicts between the church and the king in Europe and suggested that India does not need secularism.

Responses from Political Leaders

Brinda Karat criticized RN Ravi’s understanding, suggesting that he might next claim the Indian Constitution is a ‘foreign concept.’ She emphasized that secularism and the separation of religion from politics are integral parts of the Constitution.

Congress leader P Chidambaram also criticized the governor, questioning if other concepts like federalism and democracy, which also originated in Europe, should be dismissed as well. He urged constitutional functionaries to respect the principles enshrined in the Constitution.

DMK spokesperson TKS Elangovan condemned the governor’s remarks, highlighting the importance of secularism in India and urging RN Ravi to read the Constitution thoroughly.

CPI leader D Raja also deplored the governor’s statement, stressing that secularism is essential to keep religion and politics separate, as emphasized by Dr. BR Ambedkar.

Previous Controversial Remarks

This is not the first time Governor RN Ravi has made such comments. Last year, he accused those wanting to break the country of distorting the meaning of secularism in the Constitution.
