Brazil’s President Lula to Attend BRICS Summit Virtually Due to Health Advice

Brasília, Brazil – President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva of Brazil will not be attending the BRICS Summit in Kazan in person, scheduled for October 22-23. Due to medical advice, he is temporarily restricted from long-haul flights. Instead, he will participate via video link.

The President’s office stated, “President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, on medical advice, will not travel to the BRICS Summit in Kazan, due to a temporary ban on long-haul air travel.” He will maintain a regular work schedule in Brasília at the Planalto Palace.

In his place, Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira will lead the Brazilian delegation at the summit in Kazan, Russia. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed, “Minister Mauro Vieira has been appointed to lead the Brazilian delegation that will participate in the BRICS summit in Kazan, Russia. The Minister will travel tonight to participate in the meeting.”

President Lula will join the session of heads of state of the member countries virtually.

Background on BRICS

The BRICS group, originally BRIC, consists of Brazil, Russia, India, and China, and first met in 2006. The first BRIC summit was held in Yekaterinburg, Russia, in 2009. South Africa joined in 2010, making it BRICS. Recently, four new members were added: Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates.

Meanwhile, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Russia from October 22-23 to attend the 16th BRICS Summit, marking his second visit to Russia this year.
