Brazilian Supreme Court Lifts Ban on Elon Musk’s X Platform

The Brazilian Supreme Court has lifted the restriction on Elon Musk’s social media platform, X, following the payment of fines for non-compliance with court orders. Judge Alexandre de Moraes stated, “I authorise the immediate return of the activities” of X, and provided a 24-hour window for the platform’s accessibility to be restored.

Elon Musk, the owner of X and Starlink, has not yet responded to this ruling. Previously, the platform was banned in Brazil for failing to remove accounts accused of spreading false information and missing a deadline to appoint legal representation in the country.

Musk, known as a “free speech absolutist,” criticized Judge de Moraes, calling him an “evil dictator” after the ban. He also expressed support for Jair Bolsonaro, the former right-wing leader of Brazil, who spread unverified information about the October 2022 election, which he lost. Bolsonaro’s followers later invaded Brazil’s legislature in January 2023, demanding a military coup to overturn his defeat. Bolsonaro is now barred from holding public office until 2030.
