BJP MP Tejasvi Surya Urges Action on Bengaluru’s Traffic Woes
Bengaluru, Karnataka – BJP MP Tejasvi Surya has raised concerns about the severe traffic problems in Bengaluru. He stated that people are spending more time in traffic than with their families. Surya called on Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, who is also the Bengaluru Incharge Minister, to hold an urgent meeting with elected representatives and traffic experts to find solutions.
Surya highlighted that the traffic situation is worsening daily, even on Sundays. He noted that the addition of thousands of new private vehicles each day is exacerbating the problem. The city roads, including small residential lanes, are beyond their capacity, and there is no space to build more roads.
He emphasized the need to reduce the number of private vehicles and improve public transport options. Surya pointed out that BMTC buses are crowded, the Metro is packed during peak hours, and taxis and autorickshaws are unreliable. He also mentioned that footpaths are not pedestrian-friendly and are often encroached by hawkers. The condition of the roads, with potholes and unscientific humps, is also a major issue.
Surya criticized successive state governments for failing to provide the necessary vision and leadership for the city. He called for drastic measures, such as experimenting with the odd-even model or the Singapore model of limiting the number of cars. In the long term, he stressed the need to invest in public transportation and reduce private vehicles.
Surya urged Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar to convene an urgent meeting to discuss and implement solutions. He promised to continue advocating for this issue until a solution is found and expressed hope that party politics can be set aside to help the city.
