The Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP), led by Sukanto Majumdar, is conducting torch marches across West Bengal. They are protesting the alleged cover-up of a rape and murder incident involving a 33-year-old trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.

Protests and Demands

The BJP is demanding the resignation of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, accusing the state administration of systemic failure. Sukanto Majumdar stated, “The BJP has been protesting all along against how the incident of the RG Kar hospital is being suppressed.” He also mentioned that a doctor was threatened to perform the postmortem, indicating police involvement.

Junior Doctors’ Strike

Junior doctors in West Bengal called off their 40-day strike after Chief Secretary Manoj Pant assured them of safety and security measures. Dr. Aqeeb, a member of the junior doctors’ front, said they achieved some goals but many issues remain unresolved. Emergency services have resumed, but OPD services are still suspended.

CBI Investigation

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College, on September 2 for alleged corruption and financial irregularities. This followed a directive from the Calcutta High Court.

Incident Details

A woman trainee doctor was found dead in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9. The BJP continues to call for justice and systemic changes in the state’s administration.
