BJP Announces Rajya Sabha Candidates
Ravneet Singh Bittu, Kiran Choudhry, and Others
The Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) has announced nine candidates for the upcoming Rajya Sabha by-elections. Union Minister Ravneet Singh Bittu will represent Rajasthan. Bittu is the Union Minister of State for Railways and Food Processing Industries and previously lost the Lok Sabha polls from Ludhiana.
Minister of State for Fisheries and Animal Husbandry George Kurian will contest from Madhya Pradesh. Former Congress leader Kiran Choudhry, who joined the BJP earlier this year, will be the candidate from Haryana. Manan Kumar Mishra, Chairman of the Bar Council of India, will represent Bihar.
Other candidates include Dhairyashil Patil from Maharashtra, Mamta Mohanta from Odisha, Rajib Bhattacharjee from Tripura, and Mission Ranjan Das from Assam. Former Union Minister Rameswar Teli has also been fielded from Assam.
The Election Commission announced that elections to 12 vacant Rajya Sabha seats will be held on September 3. Most of these seats became vacant as sitting Rajya Sabha members were elected to the Lok Sabha. The BJP-led NDA is aiming for a majority in the Rajya Sabha after the bypolls.
