Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari Pushes for 26th Constitutional Amendment in Pakistan

In a public rally held in Hyderabad, Pakistan, Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, a prominent Pakistani politician and chairperson of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), emphasized the need for consensus on the 26th constitutional amendment. He warned that if political parties in parliament do not agree, he will use a two-thirds majority to pass the amendment. The PPP, led by Bilawal’s father Asif Ali Zardari, is in coalition with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s Pakistan Muslim League (N) and Fazlur Rehman’s Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam to implement this amendment.

Bilawal expressed his desire for all political parties to agree on the amendment, but he is prepared to rely on the majority vote if necessary. He urged parties to consider the future and work towards enhancing the dignity of parliament. The amendment aims to establish a Federal Constitutional Court (FCC) to ensure equal representation for all provinces, a promise made by his mother, former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto.

However, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party opposes the amendment, claiming it undermines the judiciary’s powers and alleging bribery attempts to gain support. Bilawal cited historical reasons for the amendment, referencing Muhammad Ali Jinnah’s call for a separate court at the 1930 Round Table Conference. He argued that the FCC would protect provincial rights and address disputes between the federation and provinces.
