Bilawal Bhutto Seeks Feedback on PPP’s Proposed Constitutional Amendments
Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, Chairman of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), has unveiled the party’s draft for constitutional amendments, inviting public feedback. A key proposal is the creation of a Federal Constitutional Court with equal representation from all federating units. This court aims to address fundamental rights, interpret the constitution, and resolve federal and inter-provincial disputes.
Bhutto emphasized the need to end the current judge appointment process, suggesting a merger of judicial and parliamentary committees to give equal roles to Parliament, Judiciary, and the legal community. He shared the draft with the government, political parties, and civil society, seeking insights to refine the amendment.
The PPP is actively engaging with political parties, Bar associations, and civil society to form a consensus. They are in dialogue with JUI, an opposition party, to create a joint draft for the 26th constitutional amendment. Meanwhile, the Pakistani Supreme Court has scheduled a hearing on October 17 regarding a petition challenging the parliament’s authority to introduce or approve these amendments.
