A court in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, has issued a notice to Asaduddin Owaisi, the President of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM). Owaisi is required to appear in court on January 7, 2025, due to an incident where he raised pro-Palestine slogans during his oath-taking as a Member of Parliament.
The case was filed by advocate Virendra Gupta, who claims that Owaisi's actions violated constitutional and legal norms. In June, Owaisi concluded his oath in the Lok Sabha with the words "Jai Palestine," after defeating Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Madhavi Latha Kompella in the recent elections, marking his fifth consecutive victory from Hyderabad, Telangana.
During the 18th Session of the Lok Sabha, Owaisi ended his oath with "Jai Bhim, Jai Meem, Jai Telangana, Jai Palestine." When questioned about his choice of words, Owaisi defended his statement, asking for constitutional provisions that it violated. He referenced Mahatma Gandhi's comments on Palestine, emphasizing the plight of the people there.
