Bangladesh’s Professor Muhammad Yunus Meets Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu at UN Assembly
Professor Muhammad Yunus, Chief Advisor to the interim Bangladesh government, held a bilateral meeting with Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu on the sidelines of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York.
Yunus shared on social media, “Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus holds a bilateral meeting with the President of Maldives, Mohamed Muizzu, on the sidelines of the UN general assembly at UN headquarters in New York on Friday, September 27, 2024.”
During the meeting, they discussed key areas of collaboration, including people-to-people exchange programs, climate change adaptation, and strengthening ties in the blue economy and maritime transportation.
President Muizzu emphasized the need to enhance educational ties, particularly through exchange programs. He advocated for increased opportunities for Maldivian students, especially in internship programs for medical students to gain hands-on experience in Bangladesh.
The leaders reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening diplomatic ties and advancing strategic cooperation on shared concerns. They reiterated their commitment to fostering deeper bilateral relations in the future.
Maldives and Bangladesh have a long-standing bilateral relationship characterized by mutual respect and cooperation. Diplomatic relations were established on September 22, 1978. The Maldives established its diplomatic presence in Bangladesh in 2008, and Bangladesh established its High Commission in Maldives in 1998.
