Bangladesh High Court Questions Bail Denial for Chinmoy Krishna Das
In Dhaka, Bangladesh, the High Court has asked the government to explain why Chinmoy Krishna Das should not be granted bail. Das, a former ISKCON leader and spokesperson for the Bangladesh Sammilit Sanatani Jagran Jote, faces sedition charges for allegedly insulting the national flag. His lawyer, Apurba Kumar Bhattachariya, confirmed the court's request for a response within two weeks.
Das was arrested on November 25 at Dhaka airport. After a lower court in Chittagong denied his bail on January 2, his legal team appealed to the High Court on January 12. Bhattachariya hopes the case will be heard next week, as the High Court only hears cases on Sundays and Mondays.
During the Chittagong hearing, Das' defense argued that he respects his country deeply, akin to his own mother, and is not a traitor. Despite this, the court, led by Judge Md Saiful Islam, denied bail. The hearing was conducted under tight security, with the prosecution represented by Advocate Mofizur Haque Bhuiyan.
Chinmoy Krishna Das remains in custody, and the case has garnered significant public interest. His legal team remains optimistic about a favorable outcome, which will influence future legal actions.
