Bangladesh Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus Cleared of Bribery Charges
Dhaka, Bangladesh – August 12: Muhammad Yunus, the Chief Advisor of Bangladesh, has been acquitted in a bribery case related to the Grameen Telecom Workers and Employees Welfare Fund. The case was filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) and the verdict was delivered by Justice Md Rabiul Alam of the Dhaka Special Judge’s Court-4.
The ACC sought to withdraw the case, leading to Yunus’s acquittal. Nurjahan Begum, Health Advisor and Managing Director of Grameen Shikkha, was also accused in the case.
This acquittal comes just four days after Yunus was cleared in another case involving labor law violations. On August 7, the Labour Appellate Tribunal overturned a six-month jail sentence against him.
In a related development, Chief Justice Obaidul Hassan resigned from his position as the head of Bangladesh’s judiciary. The resignation was announced by Law, Justice, and Parliamentary Affairs Advisor Prof Asif Nazrul in a Facebook video. Hassan cited the need to protect the judiciary and its records as the reason for his resignation.
