Balochistan Imposes Restrictions Ahead of Baloch Genocide Remembrance Day
In Balochistan, Pakistan, authorities have set several restrictions before the Baloch Yakjehti Committee's (BYC) national gathering on January 25 in Dalbandin, marking "Baloch Genocide Remembrance Day." The Deputy Commissioner of Chaghi, Ata ul Munim, warned government employees against joining political rallies, citing the Balochistan Government Servants (Conduct) Rules of 1979. Violations could lead to disciplinary action under the BEED Act 2011.
The Balochistan government has enforced Section 144 for a month, banning gatherings of five or more people and public weapon displays. Transport services in Dalbandin are advised to halt for a week. Although formal notices are said to be issued, no official confirmation exists.
An FIR was filed in Mastung against BYC's central organiser, Mahrang Baloch, and other members. The BYC called the charges "baseless," claiming they aim to suppress peaceful political activities. Locals in Dalbandin's Charsar area showed support by arranging stones to spell "Bakhairat Mahran" (Welcome Mahrang) in Brahui.
The BYC criticized the FIRs and restrictions, accusing the state of using laws like Section 144 to silence Baloch voices. They noted that many FIRs against their leaders have been dismissed by courts as unfounded, yet new cases continue to emerge. The BYC urged human rights groups and the international community to intervene, labeling these actions as "colonial" and "apartheid-like."
