Ayaz Sadiq Awaits Request for PTI and PML-N Meeting in Pakistan
In Islamabad, Pakistan, National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq has stated that neither the opposition nor the government has reached out to him to organize a meeting of the negotiating committee. He expressed his readiness to arrange the meeting quickly if requested by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) government.
Sadiq clarified that it is not his duty to set up a meeting between the PTI negotiating committee and party founder Imran Khan. He mentioned that the government and its allies need to decide on the meeting's feasibility. Sadiq had previously informed PTI leader Asad Qaiser about PTI's request for a meeting with the government.
Earlier, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur noted that a meeting was delayed due to Sadiq's absence from the country. Now that Sadiq has returned, the meeting is expected soon, with individual discussions with Khan ongoing.
Following political tensions, the PML-N government and PTI began talks in December. PTI's initial demands include releasing "political prisoners" and investigating events from May 9 and November 26. The first meeting occurred on December 23, and the second on January 2, chaired by Sadiq. PTI seeks more frequent access to Imran Khan to finalize a "charter of demands."
PTI is open to extending the deadline for talks beyond January 31. PTI leader Shibli Faraz mentioned that extending the deadline is not a major issue if talks show positive progress.
