Aurangzeb, 22, Dies from Brain-Eating Amoeba in Karachi

In a rare and tragic event, a 22-year-old man named Aurangzeb passed away from primary amoebic meningoencephalitis (PAM) in Karachi, Pakistan. This marks the third death from PAM in Karachi this year.

What is PAM?

PAM is a severe disease of the central nervous system caused by Naegleria fowleri, commonly known as the ‘brain-eating’ amoeba. This amoeba is typically found in warm freshwater like lakes, rivers, and hot springs.

How Did It Happen?

Aurangzeb contracted the disease after swimming at a farmhouse in Quaidabad on July 7. He began showing symptoms such as fever, headache, and nausea the next day. He was admitted to the hospital on July 10, and the infection was confirmed on July 11. Despite treatment at the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, Aurangzeb could not survive.

About Naegleria Fowleri

Naegleria fowleri infects humans when water containing the amoeba enters the body through the nose, often during swimming or diving. The amoeba then travels to the brain, causing severe damage. The infection is fatal in 98% of cases and progresses rapidly, usually leading to death within five days.

Previous Cases

This year, two other cases were reported in Korangi and Malir. Last year, at least 10 people in Pakistan died from this infection.

Symptoms and Prevention

Early symptoms of PAM include headache, fever, nausea, and vomiting. Later symptoms can involve a stiff neck, confusion, seizures, and coma. The amoeba cannot survive in cool, clean, and chlorinated water, making proper water treatment essential for prevention.
