Assam CM Himanta Sarma Visits Flood-Hit Dibrugarh and Majuli

Amidst the critical flood situation in Assam, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma visited Dibrugarh town on Friday to review the flood situation. He walked through the affected areas, interacting with residents and experts to find community-driven solutions.

Sharing his visit on social media platform X, Sarma wrote, “Today met the people in the flood-affected areas of Dibrugarh and took their feedback. In Dibrugarh Town, we will be engaging experts and the local residents to find a community-driven solution to the problem of inundation.”

Addressing the media, Sarma mentioned that the flood situation in Assam is improving, with water levels decreasing. However, flooding persists in some areas, particularly near the embankment bridge. He assured that efforts are ongoing to assist everyone affected.

Due to safety concerns, there has been a power cut in Dibrugarh for the last six days to prevent electrocution mishaps.

On Thursday, Sarma also visited Majuli, a river island, where he interacted with residents and youngsters. He shared on X, “Enquired about everyone’s well-being in Majuli yesterday. Also met with some bright young minds of the island!”

The flood situation in Assam remains critical, with a total death toll of 52 and about 21.13 lakh people affected across 29 districts. According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), six people died in the last 24 hours, raising the total death toll to 52. Over 3.86 lakh people are taking shelter in 515 relief camps and distribution centres in 24 flood-hit districts. Additionally, 11,20,165 animals have been affected by the floods.

The number of affected villages has risen to 3,208, with Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve reporting the death of 31 wild animals, including 23 hog deer that drowned and seven that died under care.

The flood-affected districts include Goalpara, Nagaon, Nalbari, Kamrup, Morigaon, Dibrugarh, Sonitpur, Lakhimpur, South Salmara, Dhubri, Jorhat, Charaideo, Hojai, Karimganj, Sivasagar, Bongaigaon, Barpeta, Dhemaji, Hailakandi, Golaghat, Darrang, Biswanath, Cachar, Kamrup (M), Tinsukia, Karbi Anglong, Chirang, Karbi Anglong West, and Majuli.

According to the Morigaon District Administration, the flood situation in Morigaon district remains grim, with over 55,000 people affected. Thousands of villagers are taking shelter on embankments and roads after floodwaters entered their homes. In Morigaon, 194 villages are still submerged.
