Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has introduced the Nijut Moina Scheme, a comprehensive policy aimed at eradicating child marriage in the state. The scheme was launched during a program at Lok Sewa Bhawan in Guwahati.

Financial Support for Education

Under the Nijut Moina Scheme, 10 lakh girls will receive financial grants to continue their education. The scheme offers Rs 10,000 per annum for higher secondary students, Rs 12,500 per annum for graduates, and Rs 25,000 per annum for post-graduates.

Focus on Education

Chief Minister Sarma highlighted that child marriage is prevalent in Lower and Middle Assam districts, with 50% of girls in Dhubri and South Salmara districts marrying before 18. He stressed that education is the main weapon against child marriage, and the scheme will not benefit married girls studying in colleges.

Implementation Timeline

The Nijut Moina Scheme is set to start on October 10 or November 10. Additionally, Assam police will launch another operation against child marriage in November-December. Sarma aims to end child marriage in Assam by 2026.

The Rs 1,500 crore scheme is designed to support female students in government and government-aided institutions, acting as a deterrent against child marriage.
