Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma Launches Smart Street Lighting in Guwahati

On a mission to make Guwahati the Gateway to Southeast Asia, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurated the first phase of the Smart Street Lighting project. The event took place at Nandi Mikir Primary School in Chachal, Guwahati. This project, under Guwahati Smart City Limited, costs Rs 83.96 crore and includes 20,667 smart streetlights, with over 11,000 already operational.

The system uses advanced cloud-based technology for remote control and light intensity adjustment. It also features a web-based Centralized Control and Monitoring System (CCMS) for enhanced management. To save energy, the lights automatically dim after midnight.

CM Sarma highlighted the state’s efforts to improve Guwahati’s lighting over the past few years. In 2023, the Guwahati Utility Corporation was formed to modernize the streetlight system with smart technology and centralized control. This corporation is a joint venture between the Guwahati Municipal Corporation and the Government of Assam.

He also mentioned infrastructure projects like new bridges and the upcoming installation of CCTV cameras and automatic traffic signals. The ongoing water supply project is expected to be completed by December 2024, providing new water connections to 1,50,000 people.
