Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma Inaugurates Martyr’s Memorial Park in Dhekiajuli

On Saturday, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurated the Convention Centre at the Martyr’s Memorial Park in Dhekiajuli. He also unveiled statues of martyrs who sacrificed their lives during the Quit India Movement of 1942.

The state government allocated approximately Rs. 11.94 crore in the 2020-21 budget for the construction of the park and convention centre. The project began on October 12, 2020, and is now open to the public, offering a place for future generations to learn about the heroism and patriotism of the past.

During the event, organized by the Cultural Affairs Department with the cooperation of the Sonitpur District Administration, CM Sarma highlighted the significant role of the undivided Darrang District in India’s freedom movement. He emphasized the bravery of the people of Darrang during key movements like the Non Cooperation Movement, Civil Disobedience Movement, and the Quit India Movement of 1942.

CM Sarma expressed deep reverence for the martyrs and vowed that their contributions would always be remembered. He also mentioned the government’s efforts to honor Assam’s historical legacy, including renaming roads in Dhekiajuli after the martyrs and unveiling their statues.

He referred to other key projects like the celebration of Lachit Borphukan’s 400th birth anniversary, the proposed Swahid Kanaklata Barua State University in Gohpur, and the installation of Lachit Borphukan’s statue in Jorhat. He also mentioned plans to revamp the Jorhat Central Jail into a Freedom Movement Park.

CM Sarma noted that Dhekiajuli has a significant role in India’s freedom movement, which has not been highlighted enough. He asked Cultural Affairs Minister Bimal Bora to prepare a film about Dhekiajuli’s contribution to India’s independence. He also requested Dhekiajuli College to research the events of September 20, highlighting their causes and aftermath.

On October 2, Dhekiajuli will be upgraded to a sub-district. The event was attended by Minister Housing and Urban Affairs Ashok Singhal, Minister Cultural Affairs Bimal Bora, MLAs Ganesh Limbu, Prithviraj Rabha, Krishna Kamal Tanti, and other dignitaries.
