New Delhi, India, August 8: AIMIM Chief and Hyderabad MP, Asaduddin Owaisi, has strongly criticized the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, calling it dangerous and harmful to Muslims. He argued that the bill violates several constitutional principles and aims to dismantle the Waqf Board.
Owaisi stated, "Before the introduction of the Bill, we had sent a notice to the Speaker - under Rule 72 - that we are against the introduction of this Bill. We believe that this Bill violates the principles of Articles 14, 15 and 25. This Bill violates the basic structure of the Constitution. It especially violates judicial independence and separations of powers."
He also expressed concerns about the bill's requirement for Muslims to have accepted Islam for five years to create Waqf, calling it a violation of religious freedom.
On the other hand, Union Minister of Minority Affairs, Kiren Rijiju, defended the bill, stating that it aims to address issues of mafia control over Waqf Boards. Rijiju mentioned that many Muslim delegations and MPs have supported the bill but are hesitant to speak publicly due to political reasons.
Rijiju emphasized that the government has conducted extensive consultations on the bill since 2015. The bill seeks to rename the Waqf Act, 1995, and introduce several reforms, including the establishment of a separate Board of Auqaf for Boharas and Aghakhanis, representation of various Muslim communities, and a central portal for Waqf registration.
The bill also aims to streamline the registration process, ensure representation of Muslim women and non-Muslims, and reform the Tribunal structure for better control over Waqf activities.
