In a significant achievement for the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Mehraj Malik has won the Doda assembly constituency in Jammu and Kashmir, defeating BJP’s Gajay Singh Rana. AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal congratulated Malik on his victory, marking AAP’s presence in a fifth state or Union Territory. Kejriwal expressed his excitement in a post on X and confirmed his visit to Kashmir on October 10 at Malik’s invitation.

The assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir saw the Congress-National Conference alliance winning 49 out of 90 seats, surpassing the halfway mark needed to form the government. The National Conference secured 42 seats, the Indian National Congress 6, and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) 1. Following this victory, National Conference chief Farooq Abdullah announced his son, Omar Abdullah, as the next Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir. Farooq Abdullah emphasized the alliance’s focus on addressing issues like unemployment and inflation.

The elections were the first in Jammu and Kashmir since 2014 and were conducted in three phases, starting on September 18 and concluding on September 25.
