In Rio de Janeiro, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urged G20 countries to spearhead reforms in global governance to tackle issues like poverty, inequality, and climate change. Speaking at the G20 Session on Reform of Global Governance Institutions, Guterres emphasized the need for changes in the UN Security Council, which he believes is losing its effectiveness and legitimacy.
Guterres highlighted the global governance and trust deficits, stating that worsening poverty, inequalities, and climate crises require global solutions rooted in the UN Charter. He called for the Security Council reform to be pursued with determination, as it struggles to address ongoing conflicts.
He also urged G20 nations, as the world's largest economies, to reform the international financial architecture to be more representative and fair, giving developing countries a voice. Guterres stressed the importance of mobilizing finance to close the Sustainable Development Goals financing gap and to provide debt relief for countries in need.
Guterres mentioned the upcoming Fourth International Conference on Financing for Development in Spain as an opportunity to advance these reforms. The conference will be held in Seville from June 30 to July 3, 2025.
The 2024 G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro, taking place from November 18-19, is a meeting of the Group of Twenty (G20) Heads of State and Government.
