Chandigarh’s Angad Cheema delivered an outstanding performance at the Vizag Open 2024, held at the East Point Golf Club in Visakhapatnam. Cheema, who was the runner-up in Hyderabad last week, scored a personal best of 10-under 61 in the second round, propelling him to the top of the leaderboard.

With a tournament total of 12-under 130, Cheema holds a commanding four-shot lead. Currently ranked fourth on the PGTI Ranking, he has achieved six top-10 finishes this season. Cheema is in pursuit of his second PGTI title, aiming to end an 11-year victory drought.

Top Competitors

Patna’s Aman Raj is in second place with a score of eight-under 134, following a round of 68. Bengaluru’s Aryan Roopa Anand is in third place, one shot behind Raj. The cut was set at one-over 143, with 57 professionals making it through.

Cheema’s remarkable round included an eagle and eight birdies. He started from the 10th hole and executed precise iron and wedge shots, resulting in several tap-in putts. Cheema expressed his delight, saying, “I’m delighted to have shot my personal best score. The birdie-birdie start and three really good golf shots on the 16th, 17th, and 18th, gave me the momentum.”

Cheema also shared his strategy for dealing with the hot and humid conditions, which involves staying hydrated and eating bananas during his rounds.

Aman Raj, who was tied for second overnight, recorded an eagle, two birdies, and a bogey in his round of 68, securing his position in second place. Meanwhile, round one leader Milind Soni from Hyderabad slipped to tied seventh after scoring 74 on Thursday. Reigning champion N Thangaraja from Sri Lanka is tied 16th at two-under 140. Unfortunately, all four Visakhapatnam-based golfers missed the cut.
