Andhra Pradesh Deputy CM Pawan Kalyan’s Vision for Self-Reliant Villages
On August 23, Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan spoke at a public rally in Annamayya district about his government’s commitment to transforming panchayats into self-reliant villages. He emphasized the importance of the Panchayati Raj system, calling it the ‘backbone’ of the country.
Strengthening Panchayati Raj
Kalyan highlighted the role of the Panchayati Raj system in village development, citing the movie ‘Rudraveena’ as an example. He mentioned that a strong Panchayati Raj system could help clear significant debts and praised the Rayalaseema region for its educational institutions and the fighting spirit of its youth.
Promises and Reforms
Kalyan announced that on August 23, village assemblies would be conducted across 13,326 panchayats in the state. The government plans to allocate Rs24,500 crores for 87 types of village development work, generate 9 crore workdays, and provide employment to 5.4 million families through the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA).
He also mentioned that the state was the second to implement the Panchayati Raj system and that new reforms are being introduced to further strengthen it. For instance, the funds for Independence Day and Republic Day celebrations in panchayats will be increased significantly.
Grama Sabhas and Village Development
Kalyan emphasized the importance of Grama Sabhas (village assemblies) for village development. He urged residents to participate actively in these meetings to transform their panchayats into self-reliant entities. He also mentioned the need for playgrounds for the youth and the introduction of a new Goonda Act to control land looting.
Future Plans
Kalyan shared his vision for developing Railway Koduru as a fruit capital and setting up cold storage facilities for farmers. He also mentioned the importance of organizing four Grama Sabhas every year to discuss village development and placing citizen information boards for completed works.
He concluded by highlighting the importance of women’s participation in village development and promised to bring the request for a skill development university to the attention of Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu.
