Aman Sehrawat Shines at Paris Olympics, Vinesh Phogat Retires
Indian wrestler Aman Sehrawat has made it to the semi-finals in the men’s 57kg category at the Paris Olympics. He achieved a stunning 12-0 victory over Albania’s Zelimkhan Abakanov. Aman will now compete against Japan’s Rei Higuchi for a chance to win India’s first gold medal at the Paris Olympics.
In the first period of the quarter-final match, Aman took a 3-0 lead after a takedown. He continued to dominate in the second period, showcasing his remarkable skills to secure his place in the final four.
Earlier, Aman defeated former European champion Vladimir Egorov with a 10-0 win in the first round, advancing to the quarter-finals.
However, not all Indian wrestlers had a successful outing. Vinesh Phogat was disqualified in the 50kg freestyle wrestling final for breaching the weight limit and subsequently announced her retirement from wrestling.
Anshu Malik, competing in the women’s 57kg freestyle category, lost to USA’s Helen Maroulis by 2-7. Nisha Dahiya’s campaign ended in the quarter-finals of the women’s 68kg event after an 8-10 loss to North Korea’s Pak Sol Gum. Despite leading 8-2, Nisha faced an injury, allowing Sol Gum to make a comeback.
Antim Panghal also faced defeat, losing to Turkey’s Zeynep Yetgil in the women’s 53kg freestyle round of 16 bout. Yetgil, a U23 European championship bronze medallist, won on technical superiority.
