Air India Flight Brings Passengers from Dhaka to Delhi Amid Bangladesh Unrest
New Delhi, August 7: Amid political unrest in Bangladesh, an Air India flight from Dhaka carrying 199 passengers and six infants landed in Delhi early Wednesday morning. Despite infrastructure challenges at Dhaka Airport, Air India operated a special charter flight at short notice.
Passenger Experiences
One passenger, Arpit, an Indian national, shared that the situation in Bangladesh is now under control. He mentioned that everything, including factories, offices, banks, colleges, and schools, would be operational from the next day. Arpit emphasized that he did not leave in panic and that his family was just worried.
Another passenger, Souradip Roy, stated that the situation in Bangladesh is fine now, although he mentioned that many students were killed during the unrest. Tanveer, another passenger from Sylhet, described the situation as ‘not so good, not so bad’ and recounted witnessing violence and being injured by a rubber bullet.
Political Developments
Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus has been appointed as the head of Bangladesh’s interim government. This decision was announced by Bangladesh President’s Press Secretary, Joynal Abedin, following a meeting between President Shahabuddin and the coordinators of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.
Indian Government’s Response
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar informed that there are an estimated 19,000 Indian nationals in Bangladesh, including about 9,000 students. Most students returned to India in July. He also mentioned that former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina requested approval to come to India at short notice and arrived in Delhi on Monday evening.
Jaishankar noted that the Indian government is closely monitoring the situation, especially concerning minorities in Bangladesh. He highlighted the close ties between India and Bangladesh and mentioned that the Indian government has been urging restraint and dialogue to resolve the situation.
