AIIMS New Delhi’s Organ Retrieval Banking Organisation (ORBO) held a ‘Donor Felicitation Programme’ to honor organ and tissue donors. The event highlighted the importance of organ donation, with emotional tributes from donor families, including the grandparents of a 2.5-year-old heart donor.

Professor Kaushal Kumar Verma, Head of Dermatology and Venereology at AIIMS, emphasized the need to dispel myths and fears about organ donation. He expressed gratitude to the donors and their families for their noble deeds.

ORBO has been actively promoting organ and tissue donation through mass pledging campaigns and awareness programs. They have collaborated with the BSF and conducted various competitions and programs to spread awareness among school students.

Prof. Aarti Vij, Head of ORBO, explained the extensive process of organ retrieval and transplantation, highlighting the teamwork required among various stakeholders. ORBO maintains a website and e-book to honor the stories of donors and their families.

This year, ORBO trained 300 resident doctors and 435 nursing officers. Balram, a Transplant Coordinator at ORBO, discussed the emotional challenges of grief counseling and the importance of providing psycho-social support to donor families.

AIIMS offers facilities for various types of organ transplants and maintains several banks for organs and tissues. ORBO continues to conduct mass awareness drives and training programs for medical professionals and other stakeholders.
