New Delhi [India], August 22: AIIMS Delhi has announced a security audit in response to ongoing protests by doctors demanding better security following the tragic rape and murder of a woman trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

Security Measures at AIIMS

Dr. Rima Dada, AIIMS spokesperson, stated that Director M Srinivas has assured safety and security for doctors by forming two committees. One committee will address immediate concerns, and a collaborative internal security audit will be conducted.

Dr. Dada mentioned that the director has requested protesting doctors to return to work, as many patients are facing issues due to the protests. AIIMS sees around 18,000 to 20,000 patients daily.

Enhanced Security Features

Authorities are ensuring proper lighting and secure locks in doctors’ rooms. AIIMS has 2,900 security guards and has installed AI-based CCTV cameras at entry and exit points to identify suspicious persons.

Nationwide Protests and Legal Actions

On August 9, a post-graduate trainee doctor was found dead at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. Her family alleges she was raped and murdered, sparking nationwide protests by doctors.

On August 21, the Federation of All India Medical Associations (FAIMA) moved the Supreme Court, urging for interim protection for doctors until the National Task Force (NTF) recommendations are implemented. The Supreme Court has constituted a national task force to provide safety recommendations for health professionals.

FAIMA has expressed gratitude to the Supreme Court for taking action and has prayed for interim protection for doctors.
