Afro-Asia Cup Revival: Exciting Cricket Matches Between Asia and Africa

The Afro-Asia Cup, a thrilling series of cricket matches between an Asian XI and an African XI, is set to make a comeback. This announcement was made by the Africa Cricket Association (ACA) after their recent AGM. The tournament, which has only been held twice before, in 2005 and 2007, aims to provide more competitive opportunities for players in Africa.

History of the Afro-Asia Cup

The Afro-Asia Cup was first played in South Africa in 2005 and then in India in 2007. A third edition was planned for 2009 in Kenya but did not happen. The 2005 series ended in a 1-1 draw due to rain, while the 2007 series saw Asia XI winning all three matches. Notable players like Inzamam-ul-Haq, Rahul Dravid, and MS Dhoni have participated in past tournaments.

Future Plans and Exciting Prospects

If the tournament proceeds, it could see players from India and Pakistan playing together in the same team, which is rare due to the lack of bilateral series between the two countries. Tavengwa Mukuhlani, interim chair of the ACA, expressed enthusiasm for the tournament’s revival, highlighting its financial benefits and the strong interest from both Asian and African cricket councils.

New Ventures: Africa Premier League

The ACA is also planning to introduce a new cricket league, the Africa Premier League, inspired by the Indian Premier League (IPL). CEO Cassim Suliman mentioned that this league aims to bring the excitement of the IPL to Africa, with plans to ensure it benefits everyone involved. The league is still in its early stages, with decisions on hosting and facilities yet to be finalized.
