Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury Urges Amit Shah to Protect West Bengal Migrant Workers Amid Bangladesh Turmoil

New Delhi, India – Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury has written a letter to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, requesting the protection of West Bengal’s migrant workers across the country. He cited the example of Odisha, where many poor and vulnerable migrant workers have faced social discrimination and physical violence.

Chowdhury’s letter states, “This is to draw your attention that lakhs of migratory workers from the state of West Bengal spread across the country are engaged in informal sectors in order to earn their livelihoods. Recently in the wake of the political turmoil which ended in the ouster of the Govt. of Bangladesh followed by the social tension has been also ominously impacting if not rupturing the social fabrics in some areas of the country.”

He added, “For example, in the state of Odisha a large no of migrant workers have been the victims of social discrimination, subjected to various physical violence without any provocation much to the dismay of the people of West Bengal. They are all poor and vulnerable. They need protection from violence. You are most humbly requested to take note of the grim situation facing the migrants in Odisha and to ensure an environment of peace and security.”

Bangladesh recently experienced significant violence and chaos, particularly targeting minorities, including Hindus, after Sheikh Hasina was forced to resign and flee the country following massive student protests. She arrived in India on August 5. An interim government in Bangladesh, led by Nobel Peace laureate Muhammad Yunus, was sworn in on August 8.
