20.74 Lakh New Workers Join ESI Scheme in August 2024
The Union Ministry of Labour and Employment announced that in August 2024, approximately 20.74 lakh new workers were added to the Employees’ State Insurance (ESI) Scheme. Among these, 9.89 lakh were young employees aged up to 25 years. The data also revealed that 4.14 lakh female employees registered under the scheme, highlighting the gender distribution of new enrollments.
Additionally, 28,917 new establishments were included under the ESI Scheme, expanding social security coverage. The year-on-year analysis showed a 6.80% growth in net registrations compared to August 2023. Notably, 60 transgender employees also registered, demonstrating the scheme’s inclusivity.
The ESI Scheme is a comprehensive social security program designed to offer protection against sickness, maternity, disablement, and employment-related injuries, along with medical care for insured employees and their families. The ministry noted that the payroll data is provisional as data generation is ongoing.
