15 Govindas Injured During Dahi Handi Celebrations in Mumbai
On August 27, during the Krishna Janmashtami celebrations in Mumbai, 15 Govindas were injured while participating in the Dahi Handi event. The injured are being treated at various hospitals, including Nair Hospital and Poddar Hospitals, which reported the highest number of cases with four each. Sion Hospital reported two cases, while Rajawadi Hospital, MT Agrawal Hospital, Kurla Bhabha Hospital, and St. George Hospital each reported one case.
Last year, 195 Govindas were injured during the Dahi Handi celebrations, with 18 admitted to hospitals and 177 discharged after treatment. Dahi Handi is a major cultural event where participants form a human pyramid to break an earthen pot filled with curd, butter, and other milk products. This tradition symbolizes Lord Krishna’s playfulness and love for butter and curd.
Janmashtami, the festival celebrating the birth of Lord Krishna, is marked by prayers, decorated swings, dance and music performances, and the Dahi Handi competition.
