In the past 24 hours, 14 people have died in Nepal due to landslides, floods, and lightning as the monsoon season spreads across the country. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRMA) reported that 8 people died from landslides, 5 from lightning, and 1 from flooding.

According to Dijan Bhattarai, Spokesperson at the NDRMA, a total of 44 incidents were recorded on June 26, 2024. In these incidents, 14 people lost their lives, 2 people are still unaccounted for, and 10 people sustained injuries.

On Wednesday alone, a landslide claimed five lives in Lamjung, two in Kaski, and one in Okhaldhunga. One death was also recorded due to flooding. Over the past 17 days, 28 people have died since the monsoon began on June 13, 2024.

The monsoon season in Nepal generally lasts from June 13 to September 23. The government estimates that 1.8 million people could be affected by rain-related incidents during this period. The South Asian Climate Outlook Forum predicts above-normal rainfall for most parts of South Asia during the monsoon season.

Landslides and floods are common during the monsoon season in Nepal, causing significant damage to life, property, and infrastructure. The terrain and unplanned urbanization contribute to the high mortality rate during this period.
