Zika Virus Cases Rise to 12 in Pune

Three more people in Pune tested positive for the Zika virus on Monday, increasing the total number of cases to 12, according to Pune Municipal Corporation Health Officer, Kalpana Baliwant.

Health Ministry’s Response

The Union Health Ministry has advised states to screen pregnant women for Zika virus infection and monitor the growth of the foetus in expecting mothers who test positive. Health facilities have been assigned nodal officers to ensure premises are free of Aedes mosquitoes.

Strengthening Surveillance

States have been instructed to enhance their entomological surveillance and intensify vector control activities in residential areas, workplaces, schools, construction sites, institutions, and health facilities.

First Cases and Inspections

The first Zika cases in Pune were reported by a doctor and his teenage daughter, who lived in the same area as two other cases. Health officials have conducted inspections and collected samples from the affected area.

Sample Collection and Testing

Dr. Kalpana Baliwant stated that out of 25 samples collected, 12 were from Erandwane, including seven from pregnant women. Two of these samples tested positive. An additional 13 samples from Mundhwa showed no positive results.

Focus on Pregnant Women

Pregnant women infected with Zika are at higher risk, so health officials are conducting anomaly scans and increasing surveillance in affected areas.

The spread of the virus in Pune is concerning, and efforts are being made to control the outbreak and prevent further infections. The PMC has urged citizens to follow guidelines and take necessary precautions. Police are closely monitoring the situation and taking measures to control the virus’s spread.
