Zain Qureshi Resigns Amid PTI’s Constitutional Amendment Controversy

Zain Qureshi, a member of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), has stepped down from his role as the deputy parliamentary leader in the National Assembly. This decision follows a show-cause notice from the party for alleged indiscipline during the 26th constitutional amendment discussions.

Qureshi explained that his resignation is to allow for an impartial inquiry. He affirmed his loyalty to PTI founder Imran Khan and his father, Shah Mehmood Qureshi, stating, “I will remain loyal to them.” He also revealed that he went into hiding on his father’s advice, who is currently imprisoned, to avoid supporting the amendment.

In a video statement, Qureshi denied any support for the amendment, dismissing such claims as “baseless propaganda.” He mentioned that his father advised him against supporting the amendment, emphasizing that misleading information was being spread about his stance.

The PTI had issued show-cause notices to several members, including Riyaz Fatiana, Aslam Ghuman, and Muqdad Ali Khan, for allegedly breaking party rules. The notices highlighted concerns that the amendment could undermine the judiciary’s independence and instructed members to avoid supporting the bill and to stay in safe locations.
