Zaheer Abbas Discusses Pakistan Cricket’s Challenges and Calls for India-Pakistan Cricket Revival

Zaheer Abbas on Pakistan Cricket’s Challenges

Zaheer Abbas, a legendary figure in Pakistan cricket known as the “Asian Bradman,” recently shared his concerns about the state of cricket in Pakistan. Speaking at the ‘Cricket Predicta Conclave’ in Ajman, UAE, Abbas highlighted the negative impact of the focus on T20 cricket and financial gains on the traditional Test format.

Concerns Over T20 Cricket

Abbas expressed that the emphasis on T20 cricket has led players to forget the essence of Test cricket, affecting Pakistan’s performance in longer formats. He believes that the influx of money has shifted players’ focus away from the game itself.

Criticism of Cricket Administration

Abbas criticized the leadership within the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), stating that those in charge do not understand cricket and are more concerned with personal interests than the sport or its players.

Call for India-Pakistan Cricket Revival

Looking ahead to the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy in Pakistan, Abbas advocated for a cricketing exchange between India and Pakistan. He emphasized that India’s presence would promote cricket in the region and help revive the sport in Pakistan.

Admiration for Gary Sobers

Abbas also reminisced about his admiration for Sir Gary Sobers, whom he considers the greatest cricketer. He fondly recalled playing under Sobers’ captaincy in the World XI during 1971-72.

A Memorable Incident

Abbas shared a humorous incident from a 1978 Test match against India, where he was dismissed by Indian legend Sunil Gavaskar, who took his only Test wicket.
