YouTuber Altaf Hossain Arrested for Controversial Bihu Song in Assam
Altaf Hossain, a YouTuber from Gauripur in Assam’s Dhubri district, was arrested for performing a controversial version of a traditional Bihu song. The song, titled ‘Asom tumar baapor neki, khaali miya khedibo khuja,’ has been dubbed a Miya song and has caused a lot of uproar in Assam. Miya is a term usually used for Muslims of Bangladeshi origin.
Jitumoni Baishya, the officer-in-charge of Gauripur police station, confirmed that Altaf will be produced in the Dhubri court on Tuesday. The police filed a suo-moto case in Gauripur police station and registered a case 259/24 under sections 196/299 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The FIR stated that Altaf’s song hurt religious sentiments and attempted to incite communal unrest.
Altaf was arrested last Sunday and was initially sent to police custody, which ends today.
