Young Man in Karachi Dies from Rare ‘Brain-Eating’ Amoeba Infection

A 22-year-old man named Aurangzeb from Karachi, Pakistan, has tragically passed away due to primary amoebic meningoencephalitis (PAM). This rare disease is caused by Naegleria fowleri, commonly known as the ‘brain-eating’ amoeba.

Details of the Incident

Aurangzeb contracted the infection after a picnic with friends at a farmhouse in Quaidabad on July 7, where they went swimming. He began showing symptoms such as nausea and fever the next day. He was admitted to the hospital on July 10, and the infection was confirmed on July 11.

About the Disease

PAM is a severe infection of the central nervous system. Naegleria fowleri is typically found in warm freshwater like lakes, rivers, and hot springs. The amoeba enters the body through the nose and travels to the brain, causing severe damage. The infection is almost always fatal, with a 98% mortality rate.

Current Statistics

Aurangzeb is the third person to die from PAM in Karachi this year. The other two cases were reported in Korangi and Malir. Last year, at least 10 people in Pakistan died from this infection.

Symptoms and Prevention

Early symptoms of PAM include headache, fever, nausea, and vomiting. Later symptoms can include a stiff neck, confusion, seizures, and coma. The disease progresses rapidly and usually results in death within five days. The amoeba cannot survive in cool, clean, and chlorinated water.
