Young Investors Take Over Indian Stock Market: NSE Data Shows Surge in Under-30 Participation

The National Stock Exchange (NSE) data reveals a significant rise in young investors under 30 years old in the Indian stock market. From March 2018 to August 2024, their share increased from 22.9% to 40%. Meanwhile, older age groups, especially those over 60, have seen a decline in participation.

The median age of investors dropped from 38 years in March 2018 to 32 years by March 2024, indicating a growing interest among younger individuals in stock market investing.

Changes in Age Group Participation

While the younger age group investors have seen considerable growth, the data revealed that the other age groups have experienced either stability or a decline in their market share. Investors aged 30-39 and 40-49 have seen their representation remain relatively steady. In contrast, older age groups have shown a clear decline in their involvement in the stock market.

Age Group March 2018 August 2024
Under 30 22.9% 40.0%
60+ 12.7% 7.2%

This trend suggests that stock market investing is becoming increasingly popular among younger individuals, while older generations are gradually reducing their participation.
