New Delhi, India – September 14: Yash Dayal, a talented left-arm pacer, has been selected for India’s squad for the upcoming home series against Bangladesh. This series marks India’s first inclusion of a left-arm pacer in red-ball cricket since Zaheer Khan’s retirement in 2014.

Series Details

The two-match series will start on September 19 in Chennai at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, with the second Test beginning on September 27 in Kanpur. Head coach Gautam Gambhir, in his first Test assignment, aims to secure a series win.

India’s Bowling Strength

India boasts a strong bowling unit with spinners Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, and Axar Patel, along with pacers Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj, Umesh Yadav, and Ishant Sharma. This formidable lineup has kept India undefeated in home series since 2013.

History of Left-Arm Pacers

Since World War II, 349 fast bowlers have bowled in at least 20 innings in men’s Tests, with 49 being left-armers. India has had six left-arm quicks, including Rusi Surti and Karsan Ghavri in the 1960s and 1970s. The late 1990s saw the emergence of Ashish Nehra, Zaheer Khan, Irfan Pathan, and RP Singh.

Zaheer Khan was the most successful, playing 92 Tests and taking 311 wickets. Irfan Pathan played 29 Tests, taking 100 wickets and contributing with the bat. Nehra and RP Singh had shorter careers, with Nehra taking 44 wickets in 17 Tests and RP Singh taking 40 wickets in 14 Tests.

Dayal’s Redemption

Yash Dayal’s selection is a redemption after being hit for five consecutive sixes by Rinku Singh in an IPL match. Dayal had a solid season with Royal Challengers Bengaluru, taking 18 wickets in 15 matches and helping the team reach the playoffs.

In first-class cricket, Dayal has taken 76 wickets in 24 matches, with best figures of 5/48. He also performed well in the Duleep Trophy, taking three wickets for India B in their win over India A.
