Wrestlers Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia Join Congress, BJP Leaders React
In Panchkula, Haryana, BJP leaders have accused Congress of using wrestlers Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia for political purposes. Haryana Assembly Speaker Gian Chand Gupta alleged that former Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda sponsored Phogat’s protest at Jantar Mantar. Gupta stated, ‘The way Bhupinder Singh Hooda sponsored Vinesh Phogat’s protest in Jantar Mantar and she was given such special treatment, in sports, such things must not happen.’
Former WFI president and BJP leader Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh also claimed that the wrestlers’ movement was a conspiracy led by Congress. He said, ‘On 18th January 2023, when the protest started at Jantar Mantar, I said that this is not a movement of sportspersons; Congress is behind it. Especially Bhupinder Hooda, Deepender Hooda, Priyanka Ji, and Rahul Ji. This is a movement of Congress. And today this thing has been proved.’
On Friday, Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia joined Congress ahead of the Haryana assembly polls. Phogat will run for the Julana constituency, and Punia has been appointed as the working president of the All India Kisan Congress. Both wrestlers resigned from their positions in Northern Railways earlier that day.
