Wrestlers Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia Join Congress
Wrestlers Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia are scheduled to meet Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge at his residence in Delhi at 2 p.m. followed by their official joining at the Party Headquarters on Friday.
Sources revealed that Bajrang Punia will not be contesting the Assembly Election but is likely to be appointed as the co-chairman of the campaign committee of Haryana Congress for the Haryana Assembly polls. Vinesh Phogat, on the other hand, will contest the election, with her seat to be finalized by the evening.
On Wednesday, Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia met Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi in the national capital. Polling in Haryana will be held on October 5, with votes counted on October 8.
At the Paris Olympics, Vinesh was disqualified from the 50 kg gold medal bout after being found 100 grams overweight. The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) dismissed her petition for a joint silver medal. She announced her retirement from wrestling on August 8, a day after her disqualification. Since her return, there has been speculation about her entering active politics, similar to her cousin Babita, a BJP MLA.
Meanwhile, Congress and AAP have started seat-sharing talks for the Haryana assembly polls, potentially continuing their alliance from the Lok Sabha polls earlier this year. The Congress has formed a three-member committee for seat-sharing talks with AAP and Samajwadi Party, overseen by party general secretary KC Venugopal. Congress sources indicated that the party is willing to give 3-5 seats to AAP and one to the Samajwadi Party in Haryana’s 90-member assembly. These discussions follow the suggestion of Rahul Gandhi, who emphasized the importance of not dividing the alliance votes during the Congress Central Election Committee meeting.
