World Heritage Committee’s 46th Session in India: A Memorable Experience for Delegates
The 46th session of the World Heritage Committee concluded in New Delhi, India, with delegates expressing their satisfaction. Jyoti Hosagrahar, Deputy Director of the World Heritage Centre at UNESCO, described the experience as ‘enormously rewarding’ and emphasized the importance of conservation. She noted that the session was flawlessly managed and highlighted the significance of the World Heritage Convention, which has over 196 parties.
Miguel Angel Hildmann, Argentina’s ambassador to UNESCO, praised India’s hosting and the spirit of camaraderie among delegates. He mentioned the need to protect and maintain the inscribed sites for future generations.
Caroline Varnet from the UN Secretariat enjoyed her first visit to India and appreciated the opportunity to explore the country. She emphasized the importance of including more sites, especially from Africa, in the World Heritage list.
Kagosi Mwamulowe, Director of Conservation Services and Natural Heritage Expert, celebrated the successful inscription of sites from five African states, including the Nelson Mandela legacy site and Nyokoba National Park in Zambia.
Muyumbwa Ndiyoi, Acting Executive Director of the National Heritage Conservation Convention in Zambia, praised India’s cultural preservation efforts and expressed excitement for the next session in Bulgaria. He appreciated the warm hospitality and memorable experiences in India.
The next session of the World Heritage Committee will be held in Bulgaria, with delegates looking forward to learning from the host country’s preservation efforts.
