Women Congress Protests for Women’s Safety in Himachal Pradesh

On the first day of the monsoon session of the Himachal Pradesh Assembly, the Mahila Congress staged a ‘Vidhan Sabha Gherao’ protest. They demanded enhanced safety and security for women in Himachal Pradesh and across India. This protest is part of the broader ‘Nari Nyay Aandolan’ movement, which seeks a 33% reservation for women in legislative bodies and improved safety measures nationwide.

Senior Congress leader Alka Lamba highlighted a serious allegation against BJP MLA Hansraj, who has been accused of asking for obscene videos from a young girl. She questioned the police about the actions taken on the FIR registered against him.

Referring to a recent statement by Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut, Lamba criticized an MP for comparing farmers to rapists and murderers, demanding an apology from the Prime Minister and the expulsion of the BJP MP from Parliament.

Himachal Pradesh Mahila Congress Chief Jenab Chandel expressed outrage over the safety and security of women, accusing the BJP of protecting those accused of crimes against women. She demanded the arrest of the BJP legislator and emphasized the party’s stance against derogatory remarks about farmers.

As part of the ‘Nari Nyay Aandolan,’ the Mahila Congress plans to meet state governors across India to press for their demands, focusing on women’s safety and political accountability.
