Wimbledon to Introduce AI Line Calling in 2025
For the first time in its 147-year history, Wimbledon will replace all 300 human line judges with artificial intelligence and an electronic system starting next year. The All England Club, which hosts the tournament, announced this change on its website. The new system, called Live Electronic Line Calling (Live ELC), will be used on all 18 match courts, including the Wimbledon Qualifying Competition venue.
The decision follows successful testing during this year’s Championships and aims to enhance accuracy in officiating. Sally Bolton, Chief Executive of the All England Club, stated that the technology is robust and will provide players with consistent conditions similar to other events. She emphasized the importance of balancing tradition and innovation, acknowledging the contributions of line umpires over the years.
This year’s men’s singles competition saw Carlos Alcaraz defend his title against Novak Djokovic, while Barbora Krejcikova won the women’s singles final against Jasmine Paolini.
