WhatsApp Adds New Events Feature and Expands Group Video Calls

WhatsApp has started rolling out its new events feature for group chats, which was initially available only for Communities. This feature is now accessible in regular group chats on WhatsApp, as confirmed by GSM Arena.

The feature has been spotted in WhatsApp for Android’s beta version 2.24.14.9, marking the beginning of its broader availability. Users can find a new ‘Event’ icon in the paperclip menu within group chats, allowing them to create and manage events directly within their chat groups. Group members can view and respond to the invitation, while only the event creator can modify event details. All group events are protected by end-to-end encryption to ensure privacy and security.

WhatsApp has not provided a specific timeline for the global rollout of the Events feature, but users can join the beta program for early access. In addition to the events feature, WhatsApp has introduced larger group video calls, now supporting up to 32 participants, up from the previous limit of 8. This update is available for both mobile and desktop users.

WhatsApp is also rolling out new AI-powered features to enhance user experience. These include AI chatbot interactions and custom AI stickers, now available in a dozen countries. Businesses on WhatsApp can benefit from Meta Verified, a program designed to help them showcase their legitimacy and build trust with customers.
