West Bengal Police Commissioner Urges Trust in CBI for Trainee Doctor’s Case
Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], August 16: West Bengal Police Commissioner Vineet Kumar Goyal has asked people not to believe in “rumours” and “narratives” about the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. He emphasized the importance of trusting the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which is handling the case.
Commissioner Goyal stated, “A three-member team conducted the postmortem, and it is on video. The CBI has access to the postmortem video. There is no doubt about transparency.” He denied rumours that the police had informed the victim’s family that she had committed suicide and that 150 grams of semen were found in her body. He assured that officials are cooperating with the CBI.
Speaking to the media, Commissioner Goyal said, “Far too many rumours are floating that have no basis. The case has now gone to the CBI, and let’s have faith in the agency. Our officers tried to do everything possible in the limited time we had. We are liable for legal action if anyone in our team has done anything wrong.” He dismissed the rumours about the police informing the victim’s family about a suicide and the presence of semen.
Meanwhile, 25 people have been arrested in connection with vandalism by an unidentified mob at the RG Kar Hospital campus on August 14. The mob caused damage to the protest site, vehicles, and public property. Security officials intervened to disperse the crowd. The Kolkata Police shared on social media that four more suspects were identified, and the search for remaining suspects is ongoing.
A CBI team visited RG Kar Medical College Hospital for a digital blueprint of the incident. Four doctors were summoned by the CBI for interrogation. Accused Sanjoy Roy was brought out for a medical examination. Doctors across the nation have intensified protests over the incident. Junior doctors and medical students at Gandhi Hospital in Hyderabad also staged a protest.
Earlier, West Bengal BJP president Sukanta Majumdar alleged that the vandalism was an attempt to destroy evidence. On August 9, a post-graduate trainee doctor was found dead in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The victim’s family alleged she was raped and murdered, triggering nationwide protests by doctors and medical fraternities.
